Install other Desktop Environments on MakuluLinux 15

Introduction

The new MakuluLinux 15 Series comes as a Barebones System with only the basic Software installed on the iso. During the installation of the OS you then get to choose from one of several Desktop environments. For example there is an Office environment with Software packages that will mainly be useful for Offices, or a Home Environment that is meant for general purpose Home PC’s, and so on. The software for the environment you chose during the installation process will then get downloaded from the repositories and installed. For this naturally you will need a working Internet connection.

There are several reasons for this approach to have been chosen. For example The iso itself is smaller and will take less time to upload or download. It is also easier to maintain, as only one iso has to be updated and uploaded rather than 7 in the course of time.

The instructions here allow you to install and try out other Environments after you have installed the OS, and you can remove an environment if you decide you chose the wrong one at installation time. You can also mix them, if for example you need the Office Environment as well as the Media Environment at the same time.

Instructions for the 64 bit Builds

Open a terminal and enter:

sudo apt update

sudo apt install makululinux-xfce-desktops

Now you can open the system menu, and under “Preferences” you’ll have new entries like “Install Game-Desktop” or “Remove Game-Desktop” and so on. If you open one of those entries, you will get asked for your password, and then the installation of your environment will proceed. The progress will show inside a terminal Window which will close when finished. Obviously if you click on one of the “Remove …-Desktop” options, that environment will be removed.

When you remove an environment, it is wise to install the environment you want to keep again, as some Software packages are identical in different environments, and those that are identical would have gotten removed. So if you Install the Environment you want to keep again the now missing Software will get reinstalled.
